REPORT ON A VISIT FROM SETAREKI MACANAWAI AND FREDERICK MILLER
On Tuesday 4th August, Setareki and Frederick came to Kiribati. They assisted the Kiribati Government to Finalise the Kiribati disability National Policy which was drafted in 2007. So we had a workshop from Wednesday 5th August to Thursday 6th August. All stakeholders were invited which included Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Works and Energy, a rep from the Churches, Youths, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Commerce, Attorney General, CEDAW, UNICEF, PArents of children wih disabilities and of courese members of Te Toa Matoa. The workshop was a very fruitful one.On Friday 7th August Seta Fred and I went to one of the islands which is Abemama. we were accompanied by Permanet Secretary for Ministry of Internal and Social Affairs Mr Rikiaua Takeke and one officer Ms Teebure Teeta. Our visit was part of a consultation to the outer islands and we spend 3 days there. we had a chance to share the content of the policy, for them to ammend or to include issued that we might miss. There is a hope that this policy will be launched before the end of 2009.
Te Toa Matoa had a chance to entertain them in their maneaba and they sang songs and even made them dance.On Monday evening which was a closing event, Te Toa Matoa showed a drama on the educational awareness on Swine Flue which is believed that it is spread out in Kiribati now.
Seta and Frederick left Kiribati on Tuesday 11th August .
TE TOA MATOA means a strong giant. We consider ourselves, persons with disabilities, giants with strong minds, wills and strengths to live our lives to the optimum. Although, we were born disabled or became disabled in the course of our lives, we will not let our disabilities to be a limiting/inhibiting or a deciding factor to achieve great accomplishments either on a personal or community level. In unity, if there is a will to reach that goal, there are no limits.
The name TE TOA MATOA projects a positive image too to fellow persons with disabilities as a source of encouragement and motivation to utilize what they have such as knowledge, skills and talents in order to have a fulfilling and independent lives.
Te Toa Matoa is the Kiribati Association of Persons with Disabilities. It is also intending to apply to become a member of Disabled Peoples’ international, which is people with disabilities of the world acting together for their mutual advancement. It is an organisation operating for the benefit of all people with disabilities. Te Toa Matoa speaks for itself, uniting together all people with disabilities to endure their access to a fully integrated lifestyle in the community and their right to attain their potential. Te Toa Matoa affirms the statements contained in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The objectives of Te Toa Matoa are:
To be the Cross-disability consumer organisation for al I-Kiribati with disabilities and actively represent their views.
To ensure that I-Kiribati with disabilities enjoy the rights set out in the United Nation Charters and the Charter of Rights of Disabled peoples’ International.
To alleviate the poverty and suffering experience by people with disabilities here in Kiribati by whatever financial and other means possible.
To advise Government at all levels for the implementation of policies and programs to assist people with disabilities, and advise and assist Government in that implementation.
To give information and provide advice to people with disabilities and their families, regarding Government, Community and Private disability services which would assist them to overcome the negative effects of disability on their lives.
To consult on matters of policy and share information with people with disabilities and their organizations.
To ensure that people with disabilities have proper and adequate representation perspective. This research should include research into the prevention of disability.
To seek the right of considered comment on all government policies.
To represent I-Kiribati with disabilities in all forums of Disabled Peoples’ International and at all other international forums which may affect the lives of all peoples’ with disabilities.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE
Kiribati is very busy during the 30th Independence celebration and so was Te Toa Matoa.
They participated in the choir competition which they came second, they perform the Educational awareness on Tuberculosis and they show their special talent in dancing. They also took part in the sport and most of them received prizes.
In addition there is a very important event that happened during the celebration. This is a very important event because The Republic of Kiribati always gives awards to Kiribati Citizens, awards of Orders and Decorations of Republic of Kiribati during the celebration as part of the official program.
Mrs. Teewata Aromata Rokete was awarded a National Order or Ana Kamoamoa Kiribati (AKK) by the order of the President of Kiribati.
To Teewata, this Medal is Te Toa Matoa medal because all tasks she performs are for all Kiribati people with disabilities issues.
REPORT ON TE TOA MATOA WORKSHOP 20TH JUNE
The workshop started off at 9 o'clock in the morning of Saturday 20th June 2009. The Country Mayor officially opened the workshop and more than 40 people with disabilities attended. The transport picked up people with disabiltiies from their homes around South Tarawa on Friday and they all camped out at Te Toa Matoa Maneaba ( Meeting House). The next morning Saturday the workshop started from 9 am to 2.30 pm. At 3 pm the same day Te Toa Matoa held a annual General Meeting where they discussed and shared out their constitution which was translated by Teewata. Then they will all read through this translated constitution and they will study it and they will read the ammendment which were proposed during the last AGM. The second part of the agenda was the report on how Te Toa Matoa progressed during the last 10 years. They also discussed some failures during the process and one of the failures that was discussed was the Building of the Center. Te Toa Matoa will work hard on this and they will make sure to be more firm. The third item on the agenda was a finacial report, and the treasurer and the Vice treasurer Ms Regina Ritiata and Teataake put forward their finacial report which was well presented. The last item on the agenda was a election of all the management board or the exercutive committe.

BLIND BOYS OF KIRIBATI
The Blind Boys of Kiribati have formed the Kiribati Fundraising Alliance with other NGOs - Betio Fishermen Association (www.bfa.org.ki) and Te Keang ni Kiribati. They had a Talent Show in June 2009 for fundraising.
