AUSTRALIA'S SUPPORT IN SAMOA (Source – Samoan Observer Online)
While in Samoa, Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith announced funding for an additional ST$8 million in 2009-10 under the Samoa-Australia Partnership for Development to further support the education sector in Samoa. This brings Australia’s total contribution to the education sector in Samoa over the next six years to ST$29.2 million (US$11.87 million).
The areas of support were identified as urgent priorities by the Samoan Government and will strengthen Samoa’s human resources and provide an opportunity for all people to participate in and benefit in education. The following directly affect people with disabilities
• $4 million to help support the Samoan Government’s targeted school fee payment scheme to prevent declining student attendance at school as a direct result of emerging financial hardship being felt by families and their inability to pay school fees.
• $4 million to fund three critical areas: teacher retention, technical and vocational education and training and inclusive education to ensure children with disabilities have equal access to education. The break down includes:
$2 million to support inclusive education to extend the work by SENESE School to ensure all Samoan students with disabilities have equal access to education. It builds on the Australian-funded ST$320,000 12-month pilot and will develop a five year program of support to inclusive education in Samoa to address the needs and priorities of children and young people with disabilities from early childhood interventions through to secondary schooling.
Australia’s support to education focuses on the development of new primary and secondary curriculum, teacher training, learning materials and teaching practice, providing equitable access to trained teachers, as well as facilities and equipment.
Australia is one of the largest development partners to Samoa, providing more than $60 million every year to support activities that deliver benefits to all Samoans.
Through the Samoa – Australia Pacific Partnership for Development, Australia is providing additional assistance to Samoa to support private sector growth and employment, manage the impact of climate change and improve health, education and governance.
