RA’ES HADOMI TIMOR OAN
The Timor Leste disabled peoples organisation (Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan) was formed in 2006 in Dili, Timor Leste. Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan has approximately 20 members who meet together monthly. The group has elected a leader, Mr Joazito dos Santos, who is employed by Leprosy Mission International to facilitate the development of the Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan.
The Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan vision is for Timor Leste to be free of discrimination and stigmatization towards people with disabilities. So far the group has:
• participated in sector wide Disability Working Group meetings
• attended training for the disability sector in Timor
• organised activities for International Day of the Disabled and
• been represented at community events.
A good foundation for an effective disabled peoples organisation has been laid, but consolidation and development is the goal for 2008 and beyond.
In order to effectively advocate for people with disabilities in Timor Leste, Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan seeks funds for the following:
• Travel costs for the leader in order to visit and support people with disabilities in regional and rural areas
• Equipment to support the travel objectives such as a digital camera and a lap top computer
• Salaries for a paid coordinator and staff
• Office set up costs
In November and December 2009 APIDS Director, Robyn James visited RHTO. She met with DPO members and participated in International Day of People with Disabilities activities.
